The route to your Driving Licence Starts Here

A step by step guide to gaining your full driving license

Step 1: Apply for your Provisional Driving Licence
You must hold a provisional licence before you are allowed to drive on the road.
To obtain the provisional licence you need to be 17 years old, although you can apply up to three months before your 17th birthday.
The quickest way to apply is online. Apply now or get more details via the DirectGov web site:

Step 2: Check your eyesight
You must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of at least 20 metres.
If you wear glasses or contact lenses to do this, you MUST wear them at all times when driving.

Step 3: Contact GSM Greenway
You are now in a great position to contact GSM Greenway.
We can ensure that you have a lesson booked for the date you want
(You must ensure that your licence will be in your possession by the time of your planned lesson).
You can call me to discuss any aspect of learning to drive before your lesson if required

Step 4: Your ready to start your driving lessons
Your driving lessons will follow the syllabus as set out by the DSA.
When you have completed the syllabus and achieved the required standard, you will be ready to take your driving test.

A common question is "how many lessons will I need"?.
This is a difficult question to answer accurately, as everyone learns at a different pace.

The statistics published by the DSA show that on average, candidates that pass their driving test, have taken around 45 hours of professional lessons, plus around 22 hours of private practice.

Sounds a lot?

Many people can, with determination and extra practice, complete the syllabus and be at test standard in a lot less hours.
It is not unusual to be at test standard in 20 - 30 hours with commitment and private practice

"Practice makes Perfect",
But
Perfect Practice makes Perfect.

Step 5: Prepare for and take the Theory Test
You can start working towards your Theory Test at any time and it is often best to have read The Highway Code before you take any lessons.
I recommend that all students obtain both The Highway Code and Driving, The Essential Skills books.
Both books will give you sufficient knowledge to be able to pass the multiple choice element of the test.
The second part of the Theory Test is The Hazard Perception test, where you need to identify developing hazards.
